3 Secrets To Managing Your Time Effectively

“Time is life. It is irreversible and irreplaceable. To waste your time is to waste your life, but to master your time is to master your life and make the most of it.”
Alan Lakein

Time Means Something…

And that’s the problem. It means something different to each person. And it moves and flows differently for each person.
So let me ask you this; how does time move for you? Does time spread out endlessly before you? Or do you wake up, already late for everything in your life.

What is your relationship to time?

Your Relationship to Time Affects Your Personal Experience of Time

Trust me on this one. I use to be person who was always saying things like “I never have enough time”, “there’s too much to do”, “I wish I had more time”, “I just can’t get it all done” and many more just like those.

If you compared who was busier, I’d always win. But was I really the winner? Oh no!

I was long suffering, short changed, and out of time.

Well of course I was! I was giving voice to scarcity and limitation!

Playing the song of “not enough time” is still playing the song of “not enough”.

“The common man is not concerned about the passage of time, the man of talent is”

So How Do You Bend Time To Your Will?

Getting Honest

I found that most, if not all of the time, I was living a “time fantasy” in my head. I was constantly trying to pack more into any block of time, as if I could do so by sheer force.

It was only after I burned out my adrenals that I finally heeded my bodies warning that burning the candle at both ends does not keep the light on.

So my first step was to come clean and to look at time in a new way. Then I had to change who I was in relation to Time.

It Starts With Your Beliefs

I had to start with two beliefs; that I wasn’t enough, and that I couldn’t do enough before I could tackle the belief that I didn’t have enough time. That last belief stemmed from the first two.

Sounds simple but, if you’ve ever tackled the belief of “not enough” you know what a “beast” that can be.

I had to choose new beliefs, attitudes, thoughts and even feelings to have about Time. And then I had to anchor them with new actions and habits that followed from my being changes.

For example, I used to think out my time frames pretty well. I didn’t want to arrive too early anywhere because I didn’t want to “waste time” waiting. But what that really did, when I looked at it, was waste precious energy stressing about getting places on time, when I ran into road construction or traffic (pretty common here in the city).

So I began to leave significantly early and keep a book and notepad with me at all times. Most times I arrive early now, stress free with energy to spare.

What I Found

I take more time to get places, but somehow I seem to get more done than I did when I was trying to “cut things closer”. And I just feel better about it.

Time is not a constant. I know we act like it is. But it really isn’t. It’s slippery. If I can do 2 actions in one hour and get better results while I enjoy myself more, than efforting and rushing to squeeze in 4, 5 or 6; did time move faster or slower?

When I started really looking closely at Time; not just Time, but my relationship to Time, I found that by controlling myself, I felt as if I had a better experience in time.
